Brooklyn Public Library

A modern exterior signage system for the nation’s fifth largest library system.

Challenge

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL - the fourth largest in the nation) had launched a new brand identity to much fanfare several years before this project. However, the branches had not adopted the logo or modified their signage. Moreover, the system has a variety of architectural styles across its 58 branches from Beaux-Arts to Classical Revival and Mid-Century Modern. BPL wanted visual cohesion across all branches by creating a new exterior signage system with consistent use of the logo, all while being maintenance-free.

Approach

LVCK led a design-build process to execute the implementation of a new exterior signage program, managing multiple sub-contractors and ensuring a durable, flexible, and economical solution across the 58 branch libraries.

Our Discovery phase revealed the need to raise awareness of free programs on the street, as well as bring greater visibility to the function of these “anonymous” buildings.

LVCK then led a design-build team, creating a family of exterior sign types plus signage documentation that served the needs of diverse branches and patrons.

BPL relied on us to steer the process of city approvals from the Landmarks Preservation, public design commissions, community boards, and the Department of Buildings and we were successful on all accounts. This was a phased, seven-figure implementation, beginning with a pilot roll-out of six branches and continuing for five years.

The new program creates equity and access across branches, providing a consistent street presence and entry experience for community patrons.
