Zilker Mini Train

Placemaking for the revival of Austin’s beloved mini-train at Zilker Park.

Challenge

Zilker Park (Austin’s “Central Park”) contains a whimsical children’s train that has been in almost continuous use for over 60 years. As part of a rebranding/reconstruction of the new “Zilker Eagle” from 2019-2002, LVCK needed to create a sense of place at the depot and waiting area consistent with the train’s new look in feel, which is in line with a “Keep Austin Weird” feel. We also wanted to signal to approaching families and children that a new type of experience awaits them on the train.

Approach

LVCK’s brainchild was to extend the brand experience of riding the train into the park and “pre-train experience. We also needed to help people find the train in an environment where the other park signage abounded.

LVCK developed signage that promoted clarity and safety, while also conveying a sense of fun, cognizant of kids audience and incorporating the tie dye design into the design. We applied the new train branding into the ticketing experience and the donor wall as well.
