Ben Franklin Transit

Rigorous signage standards for Washington’s Tri-Cities bus system.

Challenge

Recently completed bus stop revitalization of Ben Franklin Transit in Tri-Cities, Washington became the touchstone for signage redesign.

The resulting sign system had to be sustainable and flexible to accommodate everything from branding changes to route growth while staying within a tight budget.

Approach

Since we had to design for both the end user and the in-house agency user (the bus driver and the maintenance crew), we began our process by defining and verifying the needs of each user group.

Our user-centered approach even extended to how we authored the standards manual. We created these documents for the agency as well as all the production, installation, and maintenance vendors

Working with Billings Jackson Design, LVCK built a sign system (bi-lingual bus stop signs, route maps, and standards manual ) that is sustainable and flexible to accommodate the evolution of an agency, from branding changes to service and route growth. Our collaboration resulted in an end-to-end design service where the graphic design and physical aspects form a coherent whole, ready for procurement.

We have helped build the transit agency’s reputation as more contemporary, official, and trusted. The signs themselves have proven to be structurally sound and easy to maintain.
