Princeton Station

Bespoke signage serving the needs of a university, a transit agency, and world-class architecture.

Challenge

The Princeton Station and commuter rail line, affectionally known as “the Dinky,” is one of the most iconic symbols of the intersection of town and gown. Princeton University set out to build a new station, store, and commuter plaza as part of a major arts and transit redevelopment project. The unique, new structure and environment would accommodate multi-modal transportation (bikes, buses) in a “green” setting.

LVCK needed to design signage that would accommodate multiple entry points to the station, the unique architecture of the structure, and the special feel of this college town.

Approach

Working closely with Rick Joy Architects, we designed and detailed signage to complement the sculptural quality of the site’s buildings and train platform, an architectural space that looks different from every angle. LVCK considered how the station signage would integrate with campus wayfinding, as the station funneled people to the campus and vice versa. We leveraged strong relationships with NJ Transit to get a bespoke approach approved.
